This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before applying, and to see if things "click". Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun! Feel free to consult the institute tour and dorm guide for setting info.

When Rin looks back, he would be met with a wide, fascinated grin upon Natsu's face. He had seen all kinds of flames before, but it wasn't often that they were blue. Looking between the bush and Rin, it was apparent from the look in his eyes that Natsu's interest had been piqued.

"That was pretty awesome! How did you get them to be that blue?"

"Eh?" Rin blinked a few times before lowering his head. That was certainly a question he'd never heard before. "Uh...well, they're always blue." Could other pyros change their flame colours? He didn't know if that was possible.
vaudevil: (Oh! I was meaning to remodel.)

Ah!

[Lee lifts up his finger in an enthusiastic manner. He did read that part in her file but he's not going to mention it. He's been shot in the head once and woke up in the morgue naked and walked out without really thinking about it. That was a freaky moment in his life he could relate to.]

It sounds like you need to learn meditation!
ghostling: (✫ Give me a second)

[personal profile] ghostling 2012-10-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Meditation? How's that gonna help?

[She tilts her head and raises a brow. She can't really see how mediation will help keep her from losing control during a fight.]
vaudevil: (dramatic speaking)

[personal profile] vaudevil 2012-10-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not an easy thing to explain. Every fighter does it, well, at least every good fighter does some sort of meditation. You see, meditation allows you to clear your mind and cleanse your spirit to remain calm. You can use it to focus on past events and learn from your mistakes to overcome your next challenge.

[He walks slowly as he talks about it in a very teacher-like manner.]

It's a method of focus. Martial artists use it to imagine what their opponents would do to predict their battles. It's a balance between peace and chaos, Ying and Yang. You can't have one without the other. Logan is a very good example.
ghostling: (✫ There's quiet in the streets now)

[personal profile] ghostling 2012-10-06 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
[She listens closely, remaining focused on him the whole time.]

I guess anythin' is worth a try.
vaudevil: (Excellent!)

[personal profile] vaudevil 2012-10-06 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
[As carefree as Lee seems to be, he's still a focused teacher. He smiles and nods.]

Excellent. We'll meet in the garden tomorrow morning one hour before school and again one hour after school. This way, we can reflect and I can teach you how to recharge your chi. Yes?
ghostling: (✫ Gonna push it to the limit)

[personal profile] ghostling 2012-10-06 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
[She nods with a small smile.]

Okay.

Rosa Farrell | Final Fantasy IV

[personal profile] courageblooms 2012-10-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Action: Kitchens]

[It had started as idle evening conversation: boy, I'd really like some brownies. And everyone had agreed! Brownies would be a great idea. They could go down to the kitchen and get out some pans and some chocolate, and bake up a whole bunch, and they'd eat brownies until they fell over, and it'd be great. Right?

...who knew how to cook, again? Wait, Rosa knew how to cook! Wasn't she always making things? Rosa, would you please make us some brownies? We'll help!

They were so excited, and they wanted it so much, how could she say no? Even if she still had piles of homework to do, even if there was somewhere that she really needed to be in an hour... alright. She'd show them how to make brownies.]

Alright.... alright. we've got two square pans, two bowls, the mixing spoons, a whisk, the flour, the butter, the sugar, the eggs.... um, and what kind of chocolate is there? Cocoa powder? Baker's chocolate?

[...there was no way this could go wrong. She had done this dozens of times before. Everything would be fine. Right?]

[Action: Danger Room]

[Archery may not have been a 'mutant power' of hers, but it was still something that Rosa was very proficient at. There were trophies on her shelf and ribbons on her wall back home to prove it. But right now, that felt like the only proof that she had. All of her wins had been with a recurve bow. That's what you competed with. That's what was allowed at the Olympic level. But she had been given a compound bow here, a fancy thing with cables and pulleys. It must have been terribly expensive, and she was very grateful, of course... but it was taking some getting used to.]

....tch! Drat...

[That shot had hit the target, but it didn't hit dead center. Not good enough. She nocks another arrow and takes aim again.]

[Rosa is about to start on her own work, but notices that the girl next to her hasn't so much as touched her pencil. She was another newcomer, wasn't she? A bit like her.]

Ah. Excuse me.

[She leans a little closer and speaks softly and kindly, not wanting to seem mean or to get the teacher's attention.]

Do you need any help?

["Brotherhood of Mutants". "What happened last weekend in NYC."

Really?
Really? Don thought he knew a lot of things, but he sure as shell didn't know about that. How ironic. Him, not even knowing what was happening right above his own head before he crashed trespassed entered the Institute just days before. This was his first day in any of his classes, and he already felt awkward.

Hence, hello, new student with a deer in headlights expression on his face as he stares at the blackboard like an 18-wheeler coming at him.]

Hey. Are you doing alright? You seem a little... well, distressed.

Donatello Hamato | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

[personal profile] techyturtle 2012-10-06 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Prose]

"...Oh. Oh wow."

Well, it was one thing to work on things at home. Quite another to work on things in a place designed for designing. Donatello did enjoy the solitude he got at home - really, his brothers didn't generally bother him when he was working on a project - but he'd never been allowed in a place so...perfect for building projects. Not that he'd never been in a place like this, but as for being allowed to tinker with this kind of technology and supply base-

Where was this place his whole life? How could he have not known this place existed!? Why did he think this place was evil--well, never mind that question, he'd had his reasons.

The moment his eyes came upon the workshop room, there was no holding Don back. Three seconds later he was digging his heels in, gathering supplies. Some of the items that were being piled onto the workbench he was using were...unorthodox, to say the least. Not many people would be digging through the trash and tossing discarded banana peels and crumples juice boxes next to wood planks, after all.

This...maybe not this. Ooooh! Apple core! Fling. I can use that!

Donatello didn't see it that way. Donatello saw something else. He saw parts of a construct, cogs in a machine. A machine he intended to build right at this moment. With a slight gleam of excitement in his eyes, he put on his goggles and began to work.

Cecil!

[He was a bit late, and his arrival came moments before she was about to make her shot. Her head didn't turn, her focus was fine, but the sudden spike of joy made her grip loosen just a bit. And that was enough for her to accidentally release the shot and have it go wide, missing the target entirely.]

D... darn it!

[No swearing, no swearing... she bit her lower lip, lowered her bow, and turned to Cecil with an embarrassed smile.]

I'm fine. I'm just getting used to using this thing. That's all.

[Robin looked around the room, and spotted Donatello's face. A Hand appeared on her desk, and opened up her planner. And eye then appears on her palm as she looks of the class roster. She she see's his name, the hand vanishes.]

Ah, I apologize. I didn't realize we had a new student.

The Brotherhood of mutants is a group of mutants run by Magneto. Their goal is the opposite of our good headmasters. They want to take over the world and annihilate all regular humans. In NYC the other day an attack happened that was planned by them.

I bring this up because groups and events like them have existed throughout history. Can you name a couple Donatello?
techyturtle: (*totally not reading Twilight*)

Ah...

[Brotherhood of Mutants is run by "Magneto". They want to take over the world and annihilate humans. Write to his family and warn them about this group of people. Ask if they heard about this attack.

Still, the question does help Don's tongue to loosen a little, as well as his mind.]

Well, there...were the Assassins in the Middle East, back during the Middle Ages. They were the earliest group that could be called "terrorists" by modern standards.

[Should he go on? Sure. Why not. He just hopes he doesn't grandstand too much, too soon after his, er, moment of ignorance.]

Then there's the Black Hand in the Balkans. They were important because one of their adherents assassinated Franz Ferdinand and triggered the First World War and the modern world, really...

[Robin nodded and smiled as Don gave his answer.]

Very good. A lot of people tend to forget about the Black hand, and only remember the Assassination of Franz.

Now, why do you think these events keep repeating throughout history? Why do people make our past mistakes over and over?
