This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun! Feel free to consult the institute tour and dorm guide for setting info. We also encourage you to check out the "!!event" tag on the IC comms to brush up on the story so far.

Polly Perks | Discworld

[There's a figure of ambiguous gender in the bathroom. However, what's more noticeable is their awkwardness - an aura of 'this person doesn't belong here'. They're expecting to be told to leave.

But there's little in the way of gender markings, so good luck trying to work out if they are in the right place or not. They're skinny and dressed in hand me downs just a tad on the large size. The clothes are male, but that says little in this day and age. Their blonde hair is short, but likewise gives away little, and they're plain enough of face to either be a masculine girl or an effeminate boy - or a teenager in that awkward phrase of growth spurts.

For her part, Polly hasn't decided what bathroom would be best to use yet. She still uses female pronouns out of 17 years habit, but her mutation opens up both worlds to her. One day in the future she might decide on both - but that's in the future and for now she might introduce herself as Polly to one person and Oliver to the next.

For now she's focused on washing her hands and getting out of there before someone calls her out on being in the 'wrong' bathroom, or sees her leaving and does the same. Pissing shouldn't involve so much fretting.]

[Gaige is also washing her hands...or hand, to be perfectly correct. She's covered in grease from her latest project. She gives a glance to Polly, noting the other's utter nervousness. She couldn't care less if there was a boy in the girl's room -- man, people are here to piss, who cares if someone wandered in the wrong room?]

You okay, kid? You look like someone's trying to get you or something.

[What's this about short blonde hair and boys clothes? Polly might be surprised to find yet another teen-of-ambiguous-gender entering the room, looking rather scuffed up and bloody after a particularly rough practice session with their mutation. Briskly walking to one of the sinks, Charlie starts washing the blood off, 'tsk'-ing audibly when it's discovered on their clothes.

The other kid's nervousness is picked up rather quickly, and...]

Why so nervous? You're not up to something, are you?

[It's not meant to be accusatory, Charlie just always sounds that way...!]

[By contrast, Janice is relaxed seemingly wherever she goes, and maybe it's her age, but she's found most people here to be rather cool. Her aura is one of calm, even as she looks over at Polly with curious, large eyes. She wonders if she's made the other girl nervous. She hopes not - she hasn't even used her powers once since she got here, so how could she make someone nervous?

Still, biting her lip nervously, Janice tries to find something to say. Unfortunately, with her personality, all that comes to mind is to act cheerful and see if that worked.]

[There's a lady out in the courtyard, seemingly minding her own business. You may have seen her around or on the network. At one point she looks around, as though checking to see if anyone is looking her way, and then she laughs to herself.]

Ha! There's nothing to worry about, is there?

[Suddenly the woman is surrounded by clouds of wispy-looking smoke, and when it clears, she's still there...but she looks a little different, with shorter hair and, most noticeably, a pair of rather animal-like ears and a very large striped tail. She doesn't seem too concerned about her transformation; actually, it's been a while since she was able to reveal herself fully.]

Maaa, so that's what that smell was. -So said the bushes, though they just as suddenly faded away to reveal their hidden foxy interior. Someone had been spying on the new lady, it seemed.-

Classes are out and this kid is happily zooming around by the lake, running across the grass with his arms outstretched, sunglasses over his eyes and a cape tied around his neck.

Yes, seriously. A cape. Don't even ask.

It's a Friday and forget homework, okay. It's the weekend tomorrow and right now? Right now it's play time.

He punches the air, each one accompanied with a 'pew pew pew' noise as he pretends to take out bad guys, giant grin plastered on his face.]

[And who happens to be in the trees watching this caped kid play?

None other than one confused bird. Venom just watches in awe, wondering why this boy's running around. Is that what 'playing' looks like?]

[Janice watches curiously, and after a moment of internal debate, she decides to go over to him and just ask.]

[Ryuuichi recognizes what Charlie's up to, and he smiles slightly. Charlie looks too old for Ryuuichi to treat him like a kid, but the way he's playing is triggering Ryuuichi's Big Brother Instinct anyways and he calls out to Charlie.]

[He can be understood, but he has a strong Japanese accent despite using very slangy English.]

Hellooooo, Xavier Institute! Name's Gaige, I'm a new transfer student. I'm sure you guys care sooo much about that, though, so let's get to the part you DO care about! My mutation, aside from being awesome, is mechromancy! [She doesn't know that she can use it to affect living beings yet, though...so that'll be fun.] If you don't know what that is, let me demonstrate! [She points the camera at Deathtrap, her prized creation. She puts one hand on it and it seems to spring to life.] See? Cool, isn't it? I know, I know, don't be jealous.

Action:

[Gaige is in a common area, tinkering with her favorite robot: Deathtrap! It seems to have a mind of its own, but it can't speak -- Gaige didn't bother to make it talk. It does make grunts and noises, but nothing that can be deciphered as speech. She's really lost in her work, probably would be a good idea to NOT sneak up on her, though.]

I do amazing things and you get made awesomer because of that! [WHACK with a hammer. She seems to be fixing some dents in Deathtrap's armor.] You got pretty beat up, but I can fix that.

That's amazing. Can ya do that to a boat, or is that not mechanical-ish enough? What kinda things can you do that to? [Janice is wide-eyed and smiling, clearly awed. Her only powers are just so non-flashy by comparison. No matter that her powers have saved her life, this. This is an epically cool power.]

Early in the morning of his first day, Jackie can be found in the main courtyard in front of the Spirit of Change statue. Dressed in more traditional Chinese attire, Jackie begins going through the first, and most well known of the tai chi forms. Eyes shut, his movements are slow and fluid, his entire focus being on the way each step and motion flows naturally into the other.

Of course, such focus would mean he isn't really paying much attention to anything else so he'd likely not realize anyone was around until he stopped or they made their presence known.

[Later on that same day, after he's had a shower and other people have had a chance to actually wake up, Jackie starts the video with a light smile.]

[Janice has a bit of a Southern accent, but she's trying not to let it be blatant while she's around so many new people. Still, in her seriousness - because new classes to investigate are serious business - she slips back into it.]

Kanji's a bit of an early riser himself, and since he'd arrived at the school he'd taken to walks around the campus, venturing out a little further each time. This morning, though, he stops short, distracted by the man practicing in the courtyard.

Tai chi, right? It was so different from Kanji's way of... well, doing just about anything outside his-- erm. Hobbies.

It's like something out of a movie. He wants to say something, but the combination of language barriers and really not wanting to break the guy's concentration keeps him shut up-- at least til he's done.

[A teenage boy and a humanoid dinosaur stop near Jackie and watch him go through his forms. They're both carrying large, beat-up backpacks and have the disheveled look of two guys who've been roughing it for a while.

They watch Jackie for a bit in silence, trying to figure out what style the forms come from before the teenager finally speaks up.]

[The video is started up to show a man making himself comfortable in what can only be the faculty-only recreation area. There's an not-quite-amused-not-quite-smile on his face as he leans back.]

Morning, everyone, your favorite groundskeeper has returned from his trip back home. You kids have all been behaving while I was gone, right? [There's a raised eyebrow here that indicates no matter what answer he gets, he's not going to be too inclined to believe it. His expression then shifts to a more neutral one, but... that might be a hint of mild irritation?]

... Now what's all this I've heard about doors getting taken off their hinges?

She doesn't have a map and this campus is huge and she's not entirely sure she even got directions to the girls' dormitory.

Oh this was too perfect. This kid looked lost. That was her favorite kind of look on newbies. She stalked for a brief moment, Naoto no doubt feeling the creepy and invasive sensations of Juri's Eye on her briefly before she decided to literally pop out of nowhere and introduce herself.

"Hoo boy, you sure don't seem to be from this neck of the woods, stranger~"

[A short, blonde girl with a mop of hair is padding through the halls of the Institute, brown eyes curious. She doesn't look or seem nervous, but she's taking in everything with wide eyes, having come from less luxurious beginnings. Everything is new and utterly fascinating.

She's lost, but mostly because she keeps getting lost repeatedly, tempted to look into rooms and go down hallways, round eyes sweeping the building and snub nose scrunched up as if taking mental notes. She only stops to retie what appears to be an extremely long shoelace wrapped six times around her wrist, holding it up to the light to squint at it and make sure it's done right.

Unless someone gives her directions, she's not likely to get to class even reasonably late at this rate.]

[Skaar was walking through the halls, not really heading anyplace in particular and actually considering going outside for some fresh air when he saw the short blonde looking around with wide eyes. Her face wasn't familiar, but she could simply be a student he hadn't met yet.

Making his way over, his expression was passive, but still friendly.]

Ryuuichi Hongo & Kuro | OC

Ryuuichi stood in front of the main gate with his arms crossed over his chest, ponytail blowing in the breeze. Kuro stood at his right with his hands in the pockets of his hoodie, tail slowly swishing back and forth in excitement. The two of them looked like they had been walking for a while, with dust on Ryuuichi's sandaled feet and on Kuro's three-toed clawed feet. Large beat-up backpacks on each of their backs gave a hint as to how they had been living before arriving here.

Ryuuichi felt Kuro's excitement through their link and sighed slightly.

"You know what it was like when I was in school."

"This is the States and you have me instead of being alone."

"Doesn't mean it'll be any different."

"Doesn't mean it won't."

Ryuuichi knew what Kuro was going to say next and answered the unasked question before his other half could say anything.

"I wanna see what everyone does when they ain't had time to think'a what ta do."

Kuro couldn't deny that he wasn't curious too, but had to wonder if whoever ran the place might be angry at them for coming in without ringing the doorbell. Then again, if this place was really the sanctuary that they had heard it was, there would probably be tight security, so they might already be on camera. A brief twinge of worry passed through them both at they simultaneously wondered if this place might actually turn out to ensure safety by never letting them leave. Relying on rumors left a lot to be desired.

"If that's what it's like," Ryuuichi began.

"Then we'll fight our way out," Kuro continued.

"An' make sure we get everyone out," Ryuuichi finished.

"Never gonna be in a place like that again," they said in perfect unison.

They held out their hands to each other in perfect synch, clasped them together, and made a short run at the gate. Their feet hit the ground at the same time and they both jumped at exactly the same point, sailing over the gate and gently floating down to the ground on the other side, releasing each other's hands when they landed. Kuro pushed his hood back to fully reveal his dinosaur-like head and looked over at Ryuuichi with a grin full of sharp teeth. Ryuuichi gave a faint smile back as he felt a little bit of hope bubble up inside him to match Kuro's. They both headed towards the school, making quite the pair: a Japanese teenager in baggy leather pants and a humanoid dinosaur in a hoodie.

[Because you're probably wondering, they're two halves of the same person. Think multiple personalities where each personality has a separate body.
