This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the game opens, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun! Feel free to consult the institute tour and dorm guide for setting info. We also encourage you to check out the "!!event" tag on the IC comms to brush up on the story so far.

[Merlin is sitting outside reading a book, it's a bit chilly but he's enjoying the coolness of the morning coupled with the warmth of the sun. The book he's reading is on herbal remedies, a gift from his old mentor and he looks really into it. Even though, he holds the book with one hand and in the other he balances- in midair- a small dragon figurine.]

[Eventually, a corner of the book catches on fire a bit and Merlin scrambles to put it out, dropping the dragon figure. He groans] Ugh, not again.

[Merlin comes on screen with a cheeky grin on his face] So [he waves his hand around a bit, and is that a British accent?] What do you do for fun around here in America? New York is different from any place I've ever lived.

[he leans a bit closer to the screen and his voice lowers as if he's going to tell a secret, he looks worried] How pro-mutant is it here?

You know, I'm trying to think of cool things that you do for fun in America that you can't do anywhere else, and I'm coming up short. [A small laugh. Also you, sir, have a cute accent.] Well, apart from that everything is bigger and better here, obviously.

As for pro-mutant... it's better than a lot of places, as I understand it, even though it's far from perfect. It depends on where you are and how much you stand out, mostly.

[he smiles] Would it help if I told you that I'm a wee country lad? [he laughs this time, totally playing up his British-ness and finding himself rather amusing]

Can't be much worse than where I came from. [he smiles again, it's easy going but there is some tension behind it] Standing out, eh? Hopefully only my accent marks me as different.

[and, you know, not the fact his eyes change color when he uses his power, or the fact sometimes things catch fire around him.]

Oh my! Then you must be brought to all the joys of the city and properly corrupted to our depraved and sordid ways~. A false ID and some appropriately "hip" clothes, and you soon won't recognize yourself.

[Yes, he's joking, but don't think he wouldn't do it.]

[Also, have a small grimace of sympathy.] Oh ouch. Well, I don't come from the most accepting kind of society either, but there are a lot of places here where people are incredibly open. Mind, it helps if you only do have a cute accent or something like this- [His eyes turn momentarily yellow, doing nothing more than sending out a harmless impression of friendliness, before switching back to blue] -rather than, you know, having green skin or wings or something.

Oh, no. [he waves his arms around] I can't afford any new clothes, besides I'm told I don't have any fashion sense I'd probably make a fool out of myself. [his hand goes to the scarf around his neck, he's been made fun of of because of it before, but he liked it, even if it wasn't "in fashion," whatever that meant.]

[Merlin's jaw drops a bit and he leans forward again] You're eyes change colours too? [he levitates the dragon figure next to his computer and his eyes flash gold as he does so before the figure drops and they go back to his normal blue] Is that normal?

Oh please, I dress like a Spice Girl groupie fresh out of a skank convention. [He holds the camera away from himself so that the tight top in blue polyester that shows off his midriff can be taken in.] You just find what works for you and go with it.

[He laughs in surprise at that revelation.] I actually don't know, I've never come across it before. Mine don't always, though; only when I use my power more intensely, and usually people don't notice if I don't want them to.

[Who is Merlin to judge? He laughs at the reference to the Spice Girls.] I don't know what works for me, people have tried to dress me before but it's always uncomfortable. [and often includes dumb hats, you can't say his scarf is dumb and then give him a dumb hat, it doesn't work that way.]

I guess we're two of a kind then. [he tilts his head just slightly] Is making them not notice part of your [he makes a vague motion to say mutation, he isn't sure how open people really are about talking about it, especially with virtual strangers.]

[with that thought though...] Oh! I'm Merlin, yes, like the wizard.

Mmm, well, I'd lie if I said I didn't have a fondness for dressing people up. Usually it's my twin that suffers, though. [Because he's the best dressing dummy for when Fai wants to make dresses for himself.]

Mmm~yes, my mutation has to do with mind manipulation, so I guess that's like a safety measure to keep people from noticing. [He smiles brightly.] And that's a really cool name to have! I'm Fai, because my parents like Asian names or something.

Maybe one day I'll let you have a go at me and give your twin a break.

[he hesitates only a little bit] Mind manipulation? Is that difficult to control? [he frowns a bit, both out of concern for his own mind and concern for Fai]

[but his lips quirk upwards again] No wizard jokes? [you can be his new favorite person] It's nice to meet you Fai.

Are you sure? You'll probably end up in a dress, you know?

[He winces a tiny bit.] Sometimes I use it without realizing, yes. But it's not dangerous! It's more like impression manipulation, really. I can only affect how people see me, and mostly it sort of happens when I want people to, well, like me. Or if I get frightened.

[He laughs.] But you are kind of a wizard. We all are. And it's nice to meet you too.

[it wouldn't be the first time he's been accused of cross dressing, sometimes he wonders if Arthur still thinks that he wants to wear dresses in his spare time] I'd prefer male clothes if it's all the same. [he grins easily, seemingly unphased at the prospect of being put in a dress]

[he nods] I can use my power without realizing it too, but it's mostly when I'm asleep or emotional. [he explains because he feel like he needs to reassure Fai that he doesn't think differently of him] Do you mean physically see you or their opinion of you?

[and another laugh] No pointy hat or beard for me, thanks.

[He giggles.] I've no doubt you do, but I'm rather fond of dresses, and that's what I usually put my twin in too.

[That does help an awful lot, actually, and he does relax a bit.] It's a bit troublesome, isn't it? And opinion, kind of. I affect how people feel about me. So, well, I could technically make people really attracted to me, or really angry, although I usually don't have that much problem with especially the latter.

[He shakes his head with a smile.] No~o, you definitely look better without.

Hey, do what you want. [again, who is he to judge]

[he laughs again] You have no idea, no matter how often I clean my room I always wake up to a mess and if I'm lucky nothing is on fire.

[he crosses his arms and pretends to be offended] You don't think I can pull off a beard? [he strokes his chin]

Famous last words. [No, seriously.]

[That makes him laugh.] "A mess and sometimes on fire" is kind of a good description of my room regardless of powers, but that's because I don't clean and sometimes do chemical experiments there.

[He tilts his head as if considering it.] We~ell, it would be a pity to cover up your face, but like you said, you do what you want~.

If we ever become roommates I think we should invest in a fire extinguisher. [he laughs again]

I bet I could do it. [he, over exaggeratingly strokes his chin again.]

[and for the record, he can totally pull it off]
