This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun! Feel free to consult the institute tour and dorm guide for setting info. We also encourage you to check out the "!!event" tag on the IC comms to brush up on the story so far.

Really? [Her round face lights up. An entire new subject, based out of her favorite subject and not something boring like Math. Today just got infinitely more awesome.] I would appreciate it a lot, sir. I've read books on it, but it's not the same as bein' taught by a guy who did it. And I'm sure other kids would be interested, too.

[By contrast, Janice is relaxed seemingly wherever she goes, and maybe it's her age, but she's found most people here to be rather cool. Her aura is one of calm, even as she looks over at Polly with curious, large eyes. She wonders if she's made the other girl nervous. She hopes not - she hasn't even used her powers once since she got here, so how could she make someone nervous?

Still, biting her lip nervously, Janice tries to find something to say. Unfortunately, with her personality, all that comes to mind is to act cheerful and see if that worked.]

Hi. I like your hair.

That's amazing. Can ya do that to a boat, or is that not mechanical-ish enough? What kinda things can you do that to? [Janice is wide-eyed and smiling, clearly awed. Her only powers are just so non-flashy by comparison. No matter that her powers have saved her life, this. This is an epically cool power.]

Oh, I'm not hiding. I'm just reading.

[Bad guys? What was he talking about?]

It's impressive, to say the least. I have great respect for those who can work in metal.

"I guess I should ask where it is you wanted to go before I go and run you off a cliff." Juri tapped a finger to her chin, looking around as if searching something out.

Oh.

Huh.

What'cha readin'?

'Course you can! [He stops in his air punching, grinning brightly. The more the merrier, always.

Charlie sizes the other kid up after a moment, adopting a more scrutinizing look.] Think you can keep up in bad guy punching?

[She draws herself up to full height - which doesn't say much, since she's short - and adopts a serious face.] I can punch bad guys! Jus' give me a chance!

[She may be twelve, but she's not too old to engage in this kind of play. If anything, after dealing with the Skin Taker and her mutation, she wants to play more than ever. Age appropriateness is a foreign concept.]

[Venom holds up his book.]

It's about North American birds. I didn't realize just how diverse the avian population is in this country.

Ryuuichi stood in front of the main gate with his arms crossed over his chest, ponytail blowing in the breeze. Kuro stood at his right with his hands in the pockets of his hoodie, tail slowly swishing back and forth in excitement. The two of them looked like they had been walking for a while, with dust on Ryuuichi's sandaled feet and on Kuro's three-toed clawed feet. Large beat-up backpacks on each of their backs gave a hint as to how they had been living before arriving here.

Ryuuichi felt Kuro's excitement through their link and sighed slightly.

"You know what it was like when I was in school."

"This is the States and you have me instead of being alone."

"Doesn't mean it'll be any different."

"Doesn't mean it won't."

Ryuuichi knew what Kuro was going to say next and answered the unasked question before his other half could say anything.

"I wanna see what everyone does when they ain't had time to think'a what ta do."

Kuro couldn't deny that he wasn't curious too, but had to wonder if whoever ran the place might be angry at them for coming in without ringing the doorbell. Then again, if this place was really the sanctuary that they had heard it was, there would probably be tight security, so they might already be on camera. A brief twinge of worry passed through them both at they simultaneously wondered if this place might actually turn out to ensure safety by never letting them leave. Relying on rumors left a lot to be desired.

"If that's what it's like," Ryuuichi began.

"Then we'll fight our way out," Kuro continued.

"An' make sure we get everyone out," Ryuuichi finished.

"Never gonna be in a place like that again," they said in perfect unison.

They held out their hands to each other in perfect synch, clasped them together, and made a short run at the gate. Their feet hit the ground at the same time and they both jumped at exactly the same point, sailing over the gate and gently floating down to the ground on the other side, releasing each other's hands when they landed. Kuro pushed his hood back to fully reveal his dinosaur-like head and looked over at Ryuuichi with a grin full of sharp teeth. Ryuuichi gave a faint smile back as he felt a little bit of hope bubble up inside him to match Kuro's. They both headed towards the school, making quite the pair: a Japanese teenager in baggy leather pants and a humanoid dinosaur in a hoodie.

[Because you're probably wondering, they're two halves of the same person. Think multiple personalities where each personality has a separate body.

If he knew the potential, he'd likely never allow Jade in the state. As Ran turned the conversation back to him, Jackie simply smiled politely.

"Almost all my life. I was taught by my uncle when I was a boy."

[Well, that enthusiasm certainly was genuine and it pleased Jackie all the more. He certainly hoped there were other students as interested as she was.]

It will take me a little time to adjust the material, but it should be ready before the start of the next semester.

Alright. I'm kind of new too, but I know where a lot of the rooms are now. What room are you looking for?

[He comes up a bit closer to confirm that his skin is indeed a grey tone, and his hair a somewhat darker hue.]

[She looks at him as if he's promised her the new. A brand new course with things in it she wouldn't normally get to until she was in high school? She's the kind of person who reads encyclopedias for fun. This is a miracle.]

Thank you so, so much sir! My name's Janice, Janice Damasio. It's really great to meet you.

[Having grown up with less than kind remarks about her own clashing colors, she eyes him curiously, but doesn't remark on it. After all, if he's a nice guy, that's what matters the most, right? She holds out her class schedule to him, pointing to a class on the list, glancing at her watch briefly. She is utterly late, but she's trying, she really is.]

I think I'm supposed to be in English right now. I guess I jus' took a wrong turn or something, I don't know... Sorry about this.

"I've always loved the Chinese styles. I taught myself some Taichi when I was young, though I think I would have done much better with an actual master." Those, of course, cost money, though. And she was homeless.

"Your forms were nearly perfect. You could easily teach a class on it here at the Institute, if you hadn't already considered it."

Hey, I'm not just limited to metal! ... I just didn't bring anything else with me. [Plastic shells count...right?]

You know how much it sucks to lose an arm? I didn't like any of the crap they tried to fit me with so I made one myself. [One-handed.]

I call everyone kid, don't take it personally. [She's been to more punk shows than she can count -- gender ambiguity is par for the course.]

Guessin' you get hassled for taking a leak a lot?

I was gonna call you a liar if you knew everyone. No one's that good.

"Oh? Perhaps you could join me one morning? I don't think I'd want to teach this as a class, though I'd gladly give lessons for the benefit of anyone interested in learning."

Besides, he'd taken a glimpse at the curriculum and seen several classes focusing on combat already, so he wasn't looking to add to the list.

When Jackie has finished the form, he notices Kanji standing off to the side. He hadn't been expecting anyone to come by, but he smiled cordially enough and gave a wave of his hand.

"Good morning."

So you can create anything usin' your powers?

[Think of all those awesome sculptures she can make and animate...]

I'm the one that makes things, even without my powers. My dad's an engineer and I guess it rubbed off on me. Been making stuff as long as I've been walking!

...It only just started coming to life when I touched it a couple of years ago.
