This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.
Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun! Feel free to consult the institute tour and dorm guide for setting info. We also encourage you to check out the "!!event" tag on the IC comms to brush up on the story so far.
Ashley / WarioWare
__________
The rumors had started about two weeks ago: after sundown but before curfew, a strange shadowy creature could be seen—but never heard—lurking within the hedge maze.
While it had the look of a fantasy novel monster each and every time, it was never the same creature twice according to the students who claimed to have seen it. While the younger and easily-frightened never drew close enough to find out for certain what it was, the older and more-daring would approach the creature only to watch it vanish immediately, leaving behind not a single trace of its existence.
Those who were savvy enough, however, were quick to realize that the cause of the hedge maze monsters was likely one of the newer students, possibly seeking to practice with his or her power without other people nearby to serve as a distraction. Or, perhaps, they wanted to be alone and were using their power in an effort to intimidate others into staying away.
Action
He had gotten lost in the hedge maze somewhere around 11 AM and had remained lost throughout the day. Long since having given up any hope of being rescued, the tired custodian feebly walked aimlessly for hours.
That is, of course, until he turned a corner and practically bumped right into tonight's fantasy novel monster.
His scream is surprisingly high-pitched for such a tall guy.
Action
"Do you mind? The screaming is a bit distracting."
She would have preferred to remain uninterrupted, honestly.
Action
Hagakure stares in terror at the place where the beast previously was for a few moments, as if it might reappear as quickly as it had vanished, before even acknowledging the girl's presence. Only then does he stop shrieking.
"O-Oh! Oh, that was just you, then, right? Sorry." His voice had regained a bit of its depth. "Are you a student? Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm glad I'm not the only one lost in here."
Action
Seriously, lost in the school's own hedge maze. That either required skill, or an incredible lack of attention. And this guy was...? No, it would have spoken volumes if this man was one of the teachers, and though Ashley's opinion of the place was still bordering on DO NOT WANT, she actually didn't want more reason to think less of it.
"Do you need me to lead the way?" Her tone here is completely deadpan. Not bothering to feign sympathy. Not bothering to show an interest in helping. Making the offer anyway, however, mostly so he can be not here to start screaming again at the next bit of shadow she decides to animate.

That thing everyone keeps seeing in the maze... It's a student, right? There's no way it's something like a ghost or a monster!
...Right?
[Network— Text]
She settles on letting it drag on, to keep people guessing for a bit.]
It has to be a student. Ghosts and monsters aren't real.
[Network— Text]
That's what I thought! But I wonder who that student is. Do you think they make actual things or just shadows?
[Network— Text]
So, she won't mess with him here. Not yet, at least.]
Who knows, it could be both for all anyone knows. Actual things made out of shadows? What do you think?
[Network— Text]
I think that is cool. As long as they don't hurt anyone, they could have all the pets they want!
[Network— Text]
I'm sure we'd be hearing a lot more about it if they were actually hurting anybody. The faculty would be keeping an eye out and everything if that were the case, and the student would probably be in a lot of trouble once they were caught.
