This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun! Feel free to consult the institute tour and dorm guide for setting info. We also encourage you to check out the "!!event" tag on the IC comms to brush up on the story so far.

its not that expensive though, i just like exaggerating.

I'll take a look into it myself and see if I can afford it. I'll keep that in mind, but I've seen neither hide nor hair of the guy. What'd he do this time?

... See, this is why I've been thinking of getting a job. Anyway, I might try to get Shindou to be a charitable friend... not that I think he'd refuse. Right, so find him asap, got it.

Shindou didn't have a free period in his schedule. He did, on the other hand, have gym class, and today the temperature had inched high enough for Coach Armstrong to send them outside. He also had a set of mental defenses that could best be described as "non-existent."

So, as he came running around the side of the building, he didn't think twice about taking notice of the white-furred cat settled in the grass. Probably it was someone's pet that he hadn't encountered yet? Or they might have gotten a stray, even this far out from anyone else. Either way, he came to a stop beside it, grinning and catching his breath.

"{Are you sunning yourself out here?}" In fond-toned Japanese, because what difference did it make to a cat? "{It's warmer today, isn't it?}"

Nah, I think you covered everything. I figured there were more reasons in there, but Smile's enough on his own, isn't he?

... Well - at first she hadn't thought twice about the brunette running around to her side of the building, but it kind of changed with how he's speaking. Goodness gracious, Shindou, you better be happy she's fluent.

"{What an informal first impression. The sun is pretty great, though; kind of helps that it's a giant ball of fire in the sky.}"
Which is all said out-right, with no attempts to hide the fact she's... not actually a cat. Because she's not. This poor kid.

I'm glad I actually looked before I ducked under. It was disgusting. I've been told I'm good at derailing conversations.

When the cat actually replied, Shindou took a baffled, reflexive step back, blinking wide-eyed down at what still looked like a furry creature. Probably he shouldn't have been surprised. They had one teacher who could shapeshift like that, right? Only this voice wasn't hers or any other he recognized. He couldn't do much but boggle and color a little.

"{Sorry! I didn't realize you were -- }" Well, a person. That sounded worse than how he'd already started off, though. "{I should know better, talking to animals at this school. I didn't mean to be rude.}"

Sabitsuki stands up straight then, brushing out her skirt before replying. This kid's way too uptight - though, then again, she didn't grow up like everyone else back home. At all.

"Cool your jets, Jethro. {I'm not even an animal, unfortunately for you. Just a person with really weird powers.}" Here, she pokes his shoulder - he'd feel it, but if he's still looking at a cat, he definitely wouldn't see it.
Sorry though, Shindou; she might be chuckling a little to herself - though it's not meanly.

No, all Shindou saw was the feline in front of him rising to its feet, maybe slinking a step or two closer. The tap at his shoulder remained phantom and drew another jump from him - albeit slighter this time. He was aware enough by now not to be totally startled.

"{I just saw a cat lying out and thought...}"

He was interrupted by his brain finally shifting into gear. Whether it was the contact where it shouldn't have been or the way Sabitsuki's voice didn't quite come from where she appeared to be standing, something clicked, and -

There was a white-haired girl standing in front of him. The change would be visible on his end, too, from how he stood back in a hurry and finally met her eyes.

"I deserved that, I guess," he noted with a sheepish smile. "Are you an illusionist?"

Shindou's haste just gets a laugh from Sabitsuki, and she shakes her head.

"Totally not. More like an accidental illusionist," said with an added snerk, "I don't really mean to make people see what they do."

Here, she takes a small break so she can cough into her hand a bit - being outside for a long time is a little stressful on her lungs - but she's still smiling.

"You're just lucky you saw a cat. Coulda been way worse."

"Oh - "

Well, that explained the confusion, plus how easily he had fallen for it. On a good day, Shindou could shield himself from weaker psychic probing if he knew to be on guard against it. Whatever kind of projection Sabitsuki gave off was a different story.

His brow raised slightly at the coughing, but he simply nodded.

"Some kind of psychic, then?" And, oh, right, he ought to remember his manners, now that scratches behind the ears were off the table as a greeting. "Ah, I'm Shindou Takuto. Did you just transfer here?"

"Sort of. You can call me Sabitsuki." That's said as she holds out her other hand as ways of greeting - contagious or no, most people don't like shaking a coughed in hand.

After that, though, she continues - but not about her powers. Just a sly grin, and she speaks up again.

"So... you're a fan of music, huh? And classical, from what I'm guessing."
Said with just the slightest of snerks at the end. She's not trying to be mean, of course - just nosy. It's much easier to probe a person's mindscape than actually interrogate them.

"Nice to meet you, Sabitsuki."

Shindou was just about back on even-kilter, reaching out to give the girl's hand a light shake, when she smirked and dropped that tidbit about his music tastes. Without thinking, he tilted his head "yes" - but the rest of him was lighting up with concern again. He hadn't even felt her dipping into his thoughts. For that matter, he hadn't even been thinking about music!

"...Could you not do that?" Politely but still plainly a touch bothered. "I'm not great around psychics. With keeping them out and things like that."

"Sorry. Just thought it'd be easier than giving you a shakedown for information; didn't even go too far, anyway." Said with an added, casual shrug of course.
She doesn't see the big deal, after all; not the kind for blackmail and all that.

"... You should come by my room some other time instead, then. I can't be out here too long or I start hacking up things I probably shouldn't, so it's not like I can stand around chatting you up...
As much as I'd like to."
This kid interests her, after all - such a weak mental barrier. Poor kid didn't even notice.
