This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun! Feel free to consult the institute tour and dorm guide for setting info. We also encourage you to check out the "!!event" tag on the IC comms to brush up on the story so far.

[Midori's a bit self-conscious in her own ways, so she would actually understand somewhat if it were ever revealed to her. Although in her own case, her concerns largely deal with plain old rejection, by whoever and for whatever reason.]

I have to go to lunch soon, but I will have time after that. Should I meet you outside after I'm done? [She remembers someone offhandedly mentioning that Katt hated being indoors, but isn't sure if that's actually true or not.]

[That was mostly true. She liked being inside well-enough, but she hated being restricted to just inside and needed to be able to go outside whenever she desired it.]

[Still, she wasn't dense enough to be unable to see somebody trying to meet her part-way.]

The space around them dimmed somewhat, with the light collecting above Midori's hand and drawing the image of a flame, which she looked over for a few moments before allowing it to dissipate and return the light to where it belonged.

"I might be able to draw images and stuff myself," she began, "but everybody sees the same thing. It's pretty easy to see through it too, unless I've got enough light to work with, but too much light at once is when it starts wearing me down." That was to say, the more light was involved, the more of a strain it put on her mind. She felt a bit limited as a result, unable to do anything particularly large, complicated, or involving a strong light without tiring herself out quickly. Her own laser pointer put a similar strain on her, which was why she preferred using normal lights instead.

"At least the more-practical uses for it aren't too tiring." She pulled her flashlight from its pocket and twirled it between her fingers a few times. "Who knows if or when I'd have to light up another classroom with just this thing?"

[hipsterbane]

"I don't think so. But i've spent most of the life I remember in Lithuania and Hokkaido." She pulls her denim jacket off, wings folding inward so she can pull it over them. She hands it to her. Even though the chill raised goose flesh on her arms, she didn't mind it. Something about it suited her. "Maybe you've just gotten spoiled by all this central heating. How's the little urchin?"

"They must be thieves instead of beggars, then." He didn't sound as bothered as his words might have implied, though. Maybe it was because he was resigned, or maybe it was because he did have some faith that she would pay him back in some fashion, but... Submitting to his fate, he set his lunch down between the two of them.

Archer just shrugged, which was, perhaps, not the most sympathetic response in the world. "Complain all you want. Just don't be surprised when it's treated like what it is." Then, in what might have been some vague attempt to actually be helpful, he added, "They still let you sleep in a bed, don't they? So make it before you turn in for the night."

He didn't get the chance to finish his lunch before he lost his appetite completely. He wasn't about to argue and he certainly wasn't in the mood to argue. Skilled hands closed up the box and slid it back into its holder.

Whoever this person is, he touched on a very sensitive matter and it was Lee's own fault that he landed himself in that position despite the demotion and even worse, he wasn't about to say why he was put there.

In a dignified manner, Lee stood up from his seat, picked up his box. It was back to work and now he was beginning to feel bitter.

"It was nice speaking with you. Good day." He bowed before he turned and walked away.

You're the one who told me to come over and clean it off. How about next time I ask you for help, you come right over?

"I wouldn't feel so limited. You'll learn what you are truly capable of here, after all." Ran chuckled, reaching to rub at Midori's hair a bit. "Just have some patience. You're already aware of where your weaknesses currently are. Now you must work to overcome them."

Tutor. Education.

And then a face of mock offense. "Archer-san! I am no thief! I simply borrow. Goodness, how rude!" Though her laugh probably solidified the indication that she wasn't actually bothered by his assessment.

"You'd think I'd be used to it, having lived in Nagano for so long. You know how the winters can get there," Ran was grateful for the jacket, her tails shifting as she put on on around front.

"Chen is doing... so wonderfully. She's making friends, doing well in her classes. She's not ashamed of who she is anymore. I've never been happier for her."

Patience wasn't really one of Midori's strong points, but Ran was more than aware of it thanks to a recent conversation over the network. Impatient as she could be, though, she would still work toward her goals just like anyone else. "Well, yeah. That's why I'm here, isn't it?"

She also looked just mildly irritated by the hair-ruffling, but made no real objections to it; she actually felt that she got along with Ran well enough, and didn't want to go doing or saying anything that might ruin that.

She remembered Chen, the shy but energetic little girl with the cat ears, tail and fangs. It was a cute combination, but that could almost be as obnoxious as looking obnoxiously ugly, with the way people felt entitled to violate your personal space, she knew from experience. And any evidence of mutation, no matter how kawaii, could make your life hell.

"That's good to hear. She's in good hands with you and Yakumo."

To tell the truth, Reki didn't quite get what Ran and Yukari's relationship was, though she had her suspicions.

If you're going to be around Ran, you have to get used to a little mothering. It's just her nature.

"Now, if you have some free time, we can do a bit of training."

Yukari raised her own wife Their relationship would probably remain that mysterious, really. Yukari spoke in riddles, and Ran never said more than what was needed.

"Well, to be honest, I think it's mostly this place that helps her. Yukari and I can only do so much. Being around her own kind... that's what is inspiring her smiles these days."
